Squeaking sound? Golf mk2 1.6 driver

Hey everyone thought someone maybe able to shed some light on an issue that i seem to have.

since buying the car there has been a squeaky/or some sort of scrapin sound coming from the front as i find the biting point and move off, i noticed that the engine mount was knackered!! so i've just replaed that and the knocking or thud i use to have has gone, but there's still this squeak and it fades the minute the car accelerates, then when i change gear there's another squeak whilst it bites then it fades away again.....

this all happens at low revs then quietens as the revs rise...

any help would be much appreciated

Thrust bearing in the gearbox?

that was my first thought but i've been told that would grind all the time, and would go quiet when the clutch is pressed in...this goes quiet on its own the minute i go over 2.5k revs?????

Sympoms sound like what i had in the polo and that was the thrust bearing!

yea sounds like its probably the release bearing , wouldnt worry about it too much tho, u will hear it on tickover all the time until u put the clutch in before it completley goes, i had a noisy bearing on my astra gte yrs ago for over a year and 15,000 miles later before it exploded and welded itself to the gearbox shaft . even then i drove it 30 miles home without the clutch . dont worry loll

lol , that's the only confusing thing tho....... there is no noise at tick over or idle?? it's sounds really smooth other than the usual rotating belt noises they go when you spray WD40 into the alternator and water pump....

yea they do sometimes do it as u say when setting off. it could still be something else tho, just see if it gets any worse
